Poker is a card game in which players make bets on cards in order to win money. It can be played with any number of players, though the ideal number is six or eight. Players compete to reach the highest possible hand, called a “pot,” by showing the best combination of cards at the showdown. These hands can range from a high card to a Royal Flush. Those with the highest hands win the pot.
In a typical game, the high hand wins half of the pot, while the lowest hand wins the other half of the pot. In order to qualify for a low hand, a player must have five cards below eight. The lowest possible hand is called a “low hand,” and is determined by a system known as A-to-5 lowball. Straights are not counted against low hands.
